Siyabonga Nene, popularly known as Big Zulu, is a South African rapper, songwriter, and actor. He rose to recognition in 2016 following the release of his first hit, “Donsa Nkabi”. Big Zulu is also known for his roles in the TV series, Isibaya, One Mic, and Uzalo. In 2020, he released the critically acclaimed hit song “Mali Eningi”, featuring Award-winning South African rapper Riky Rick and Intaba Yase Dubai.

Early Life & Career

Siyabonga Nene grew up listening to Maskandi and Isichathamiya music. In addition, he was influenced by Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Phuzekemizi and Imithente. Before attaining recognition, he worked as a Taxi driver.

 

He signed his first major music contract in 2015 with Universal Music. Zulu’s debut album “Ushun Wenkabi” was released in 2018. The album spawned the platinum-selling single “Vuma Dlozi”. His second album, “Ungqongqoshe Woongqongqoshe”, was released in 2019. The album contains the chart-topping single, “Ama Million”, which peaked at number 5 on the iTunes chart. The album also earned a South African Music Award nomination in 2020. He followed it with another chart-topper, “Mali Eningi”, which features SA rapper Riky Rick & Intaba Yase Dubai. The song has been certified 2 times platinum.

Big Zulu founded the label Inkabi Records. The label signed South African singer Mduduzi Ncube.

Big Zulu is in a relationship with Lebogang Makenete. The two have dated for years, and their relationship has been plagued with a lot of drama. The couple is blessed with a daughter. They have also been rumoured to fight a lot. In 2018, Big Zulu was arrested for allegedly assaulting Makenenete, which resulted in a separation. While they were apart, Zulu had an affair with popular PR guru, Bulelwa Nazo, which led to the birth of his second child, a boy, Shaka.
